Review: When You Were Everything by Ashley Woodfolk

4 stars (I really liked it).

When You Were Everything is the story of the breakup of two girls, Cleo and Layla, who have been best friends almost all their lives. The story is told half in the past, back when Cleo and Layla were close and leading up to the ending of their friendship, and half in the present, when Cleo has been asked to tutor Layla in school and meanwhile is trying to find a way forward without her former best friend. It is beautifully done so that the tension between them is believable and sad, where you don’t know if you hope they make up or if you hope they move on without one another. There’s also romance, but it takes a back seat to the friendship plotline.

I enjoyed reading the entire way through.
